What I Ate Wednesday: Let’s Talk Superfoods

What I Ate Wednesday: Let’s Talk Superfoodsfeatured

Hey guys!

Today I am bringing you another edition of WIAW. I had so much fun making this last week that I went ahead and did a second edition!

When you take pictures of what you eat, you are reminded of EVERYTHING you ate that day, and you might start to see patterns. For example, I sometimes try to eat fruit after supper to curb sugar cravings, and it never works. On this particular day of eats, I scanned through the pictures of the foods I ate that day and thought, “wow, look at all these superfoods!” and then I immediately mentally slapped my self for using such annoying vocabulary.

Ugh, superfoods.

Egg and Spinach Omelet, Wilted Spinach and Whole Wheat Toast (I should have eaten two toasts, I was hungry again too soon!)

Superfoods Eaten: Eggs and Spinach

I strongly dislike how much this word is used for marketing purposes, for new diets or as a cure-all food. The real word for these foods, at least in my book, is a “nutrient-dense food”. But… In all seriousness, who would be attracted to a food that claims that? (Except for me, and probably you, my fellow food lovers).

A nutrient dense food means that there are many nutrients, vitamins, phytochemicals and/or antioxidants in comparison to the caloric content of that food. The food could even have a higher calorie content, but this would be balanced out by also offering many nutrients and vitamins. These types of foods can help you achieve your daily micronutrient requirements (micronutrients being all the vitamins and minerals required in your diet).

The term superfood seems so false to me, there is no single food that will help you reach your nutritional goals and act as a super hero. Of course, there are foods that are “nutritional bangs for your buck”, but they can’t make up a healthy diet on their own.

I think the real superfood, or “super” anything, is variety. Varying the foods you eat is the best way to get all the nutrients you need and to satisfy your mind and body!

Copper Branch Takeout

Brace yourselves for the best looking lunch EVER!

On a total parenthesis here, I NEED to talk to you all about Copper Branch. Now, I know that this is a Montreal-based restaurant and does not really exist anywhere else at the moment but YOU STILL NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT.

This restaurant is completely vegan and amazing. James and I ordered this for lunch and received it within 20 minutes flat! Oh man, healthy take out food makes me weak in the knees. If you live near Montreal, drop everything you own and run to the nearest one.

Superfoods Eaten: Goji Berries, Beet, Quinoa, Edamame (And many more…)

I simply lost all control while eating this, this was insanely delicious and very filling! The Carrot keftedes (does anyone know exactly what these are?!) were so good, they were reminiscent of a falafel! There was just so much going on, I am hungry just thinking about this bad boy.

Alright, coming back to my superfood talk!

In research settings, the way in which the positive effects of these foods is studied is difficult to translate for real day to day life. For example, if researchers are studying the effect of antioxidants in blueberries, they will give huge amounts on a daily basis, which is not exactly representative of real life (source).

Found these chocolate when I got home, they were in a box with a bunch of different varieties. I took two before studying, they were SO good.

Superfood eaten: Cocoa

It has also been shown that the positive effects of these foods, which are often quite real, is best achieved if eaten regularly. In all honesty, I don’t exactly feed my body with goji berries or beets on a regular and consistent basis.

Now, don’t get me wrong! Am I saying that all these”superfoods” are complete lies and have no health benefits?! Heck no! I am just saying that it is useless to get obsessed with one food, thinking that it is packed with a bunch of nutrients and life-saving phytochemicals! I am definitely not saying that it isn’t totally okay to boast about a food’s nutritional quality, because I do it all the time!

Where am I going with this then? I think you guys might know… Eating a variety of foods on a daily basis and including nutrient-dense foods will allow you to reap from the benefits without having to chew on kale or consume beets until you have a panic attack after noticing your waste products (a fancy word use) are red (this may or may not have happened to me).

Magic Bars for dessert, coconut and chocolate DELICIOUSNESS

Superfood eaten: Coconut, EagleBrand (don’t you dare tell me sweetened condensed milk isn’t a superfood. Anything with a god-like texture like this one is a superfood in my books!!)

The reason I am highlighting all the superfoods I ate is to try and address an important point. A lot of foods can be considered superfoods, so it really comes down to, again, this idea that consuming different nutrient-dense foods, on a daily basis, WILL satisfy your nutritional needs.

Small bowl of Dragonfruit after supper, I honestly was not enjoying this that much. It is better mixed into yogurt!

Superfoods Eaten: Chia Seeds, Rooibos Tea

I really tried to study but it was so hard, I had no motivation! I ended up conveniently wasting my time by whipping up a quick batch of my favorite-ever chia muffins to satisfy this little bit of hunger I had later in the night!

Do you like my motivational commands on my tea mug?! I thought it would help me concentrate, but it did not.

Have a great day everyone!

What are your favorite superfoods nutrient dense foods?
